Artist's Statement
I am a man of few words; my art will speak for me.
Edward Sobanski was born in 1957 in the beautiful Carpathian Mountains of Poland in the town of Zakopane. He has been a artist for over 25 years working as a Master Sculptor in wood which is reflected in the very fine museum quality of art he has created. Some of those works have sold in Europe for well over $60,000.
Edward Sobanski moved to the United States in 2001, and has applied and been accepted for American citizenship effective in 2007.
In March of 2006 he asked his grandson Julek what he wanted for his 4th birthday and Julek asked if his grandfather could paint a portrait of him. For the first time since attending art school he took paint to canvas and painted "Julek." That in turn inspired him to create "Me" a self-portrait.
Upon completion of "Me" he realized that the experience of creating the two paintings has re-energized his former love of painting. As an artist he is currently totally engaged, and focused with the re-discovery of color and composition, and is creating pieces which are distinctively different and all very original.
Edward Sobanski is the painter of a varied body of work, his choice of colors, and brushstrokes utilized in creating these paintings speak for themselves. He is legally blind in his left eye and has very poor vision in the right eye.
There are no studies prior to starting his work, he goes to the canvas with no concept and armed only with an open mind he starts applying paint, and so his creations are born on the spot.
Pablo Picasso stated the following:
"Painting is stronger than me; it makes me do it's bidding."
This also holds true of Edward Sobanski he is a tireless painter, and all he wants is to paint all the time.
Edward Sobanski moved to Las Vegas in January 2007 to open Edward & Edward a contemporary art gallery located in the heart of the fast growing arts district, and his presence will add credibility to the Las Vegas art scene.
His partner and friend Edward van der Meer a Dutch national will handle the day to day operations of the gallery. Edward van der Meer and his American wife Kel has lived in Las Vegas since 2002 and his background is in business and commercial real estate. He has had a love and passion for art his whole life, and greatly appreciates the works of art created by Edward Sobanski.
